A restaurant we frequent along the Mississippi River in river town of Grafton, Illinois always had these tall plants with large beautiful blooms on them. One day when we arrived at the restaurant, the owner was sitting on a bench near the flowers harvesting seeds from the expired blooms. We stood and talked to her for a few minutes and I was asking questions about the flowers. She graciously gave me three bags of hollyhock seeds, purple, pink and white for the next growing season. I’ve never planted hollyhocks before and was amazed when they came up and grew to a height of well over six foot. The tall stalks had ample blooms for me to chose from and I thought these three were the most beautiful of all.
