My first Christmas as a single mom was looming very gray for me. As a treat my brother and his partner invited me to go with them to cut a Christmas tree. I had never cut a tree before, I had always bought the precut tree from a lot. I have very poignant memories our trip that day to the Christmas tree farm, probably because my emotions were raw, but what stuck with me was how much fun we had tramping around the hills, choosing our tree, cutting it down and dragging it back. (Well, maybe the dragging back wasn’t THAT much fun.) We ended up with two trees that day; one tied to the roof of the car and one sticking out of the trunk and drove home singing “Santa Baby.” After that year, I made it a point to take my kids to a more local Christmas Tree farm, Sunbrite Christmas Tree in O’Fallon. We’ve cut trees in the rain, in the snow, in bitter cold, and even sweatshirt weather which was the case the year this picture was taken.
